East Pierce volunteers drill every week, practicing fire, rescue and
emergency medical skills.

The East Pierce Volunteer Firefighters' Association was created following the merger of The Bonney Lake Fire Department, Lake Tapps Fire Department and Pierce County Fire District #24 (also known as East Pierce Fire and Rescue) with Pierce County Fire District#12 and South Prairie Fire District #20 and most recently, Pierce County Fire District #8 (Edgewood).

Under the leadership of Chief Jerry E. Thorson, the department provides a combination fire service of career and volunteer professionals
dedicated to protecting our district now
and well into the future.

The East Pierce Volunteer Firefighters' Association is proud to be a part of one of the most progressive fire departments in our region.  The District protects 152 square miles and an estimated 85,000 citizens.

More than 40 volunteer firefighter/EMTs and EMTs, many with over 20 years of experience, protect our communities from 12 stations, six staffed and six volunteer.

Firefighting History

The history and traditions of the volunteer fire service in the United States dates back to the 17th Century British Colonies.  Many of our founding fathers, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were volunteer firefighters.

Many essential tasks still depend on individuals desire to volunteer in a variety of ways, including the delivery of meals, assisting the homeless, raising money to fight diseases and working with worldwide organizations to abolish hunger.  Being a volunteer in some parts of the country is more than a tradition, it's a way of life, "neighbor helping neighbor".

Today, nearly 80% of the communities in our country are protected by volunteer firefighters.

We are proud of our history of service at East Pierce Fire and Rescue. Many of our former volunteers have been fortunate enough to be hired as career firefighters at East Pierce or other fire services. Their ability to become career firefighters is a testament to the training, mentoring and experience gained while volunteering at East Pierce.

of public education events.
